Part A:
Here are the 'Follow up' questions from last week.

Read Mark 6:1 - 8:9
1. In the previous chapters (1-5) Mark portrayed Jesus' power and authority. He recorded various miracles: healing the sick, casting out demons, raising the dead, calming a storm.

How does this passage (Mark 6:1-8:29) add to that picture? (Refer to Mark 6:32-44, 47-48; 7:31-37; 8:1-10, 22-26.)

2. Jesus referred to the large crowd in Mark 6:34 as "sheep without a shepherd". What did he do about it?

In a modern day context, if Jesus were to look at the faces of people in a busy town, do you think he would say the same thing? Why or why not?

Do you feel the need to have Jesus as your shepherd?

3. Write down the various contrasting reactions to Jesus preaching and miracles:
a) in his home synagogue (Mark 6:1-6)
b) among people generally (Mark 6:14-15. 53-56; 7:37)
c) from the disciples (Mark 6:51-52)
d) from the religious leaders (Mark 8:11)

Why do you think people responded so differently?

Do you identify with one of those groups mentioned above?

4. Read Jesus' question in Mark 8:29. How would you have responded before you started Christianity Explored?

Part B:
Read Mark 15:33-39
What was unusual at the "sixth hour" (around mid-day) as Jesus was dying?

In the Bible, darkness is a sign of God's anger and judgement, how was it different this time?

What as the relationship between Jesus and his Father before his death on the cross? See Mark 1:9-11 and Mark 9:7)

Look at verse 34, what happened between Jesus and his Father at the cross?

Look at verses 37-38, what happened in the temple in Jerusalem when Jesus died?

How did Jesus death change our relationship with God?

Read Mark 10:45
Why did Jesus die?

How would you react to this?

Mid Week Update

Hi all, here are the questions for this week:

Part 1:
Read Mark 12:28-30
1. How should we treat God? (see verse 30)
2. How do we treat God?

Read Mark 7:20-23
3. Where does sin originate (see verse 21 & 23)
4. What is the consequence of our sin?

Read Mark 9:46-47
5. What does Jesus tell us to do about the causes of sin?
6. Why do you think Jesus uses such serious examples when speaking about the need to avoid hell?
7. Jesus believed in hell. Should we? Why or why not?
8. If someone said to you, "When I die, God will be pleased with me because I was a good person"? How would you respond?

Part 2:
Read Mark 3:7 - 5:43
1. In this passage Mark records Jesus doing four specific miracles:
a) calming a storm (Mark 4:35-41)
b) healing a demon-possessed man (Mark 5:1-20)
c) healing a sick woman (mark 5:25-34)
d) raising a dead girl to life (Mark 5:35-43)
With regards to the above, what does Jesus show authority over?
How does this add to what we've already read about his power and authority in the earlier chapters?

2. When Jairus's daughter passed away, and all hope seemed to be lost (Mark 5:35), what did Jesus ask Jairus to do (verse 36)?
a) Was that a reasonable thing to ask?

3. Seeing at all four events in Q1(a-d), what are the various ways in which people respond to Jesus? Refer to:
a) Mark 4:40-41
b) Mark 5:15
c) Mark 5:27-28, 34
d) Mark 5:42
Do you see yourself in any of these responses?

Read Mark 1:1-20
1. The word 'gospel' means 'good news'. Mark begins his book of good news with 3 statements about Jesus.
a) by the Old Testament prophets (messengers) (Mark 1:2-3)
b) by John the Baptist (Mark 1:7)
c) by God himself (Mark 1:11)

What do each say about Jesus?

Read Mark 1:21 - 2:17
2. In chapters 1 & 2 Jesus shows his authority in different situations. (See Mark 1:16-20, 21-22, 23-28, 40-45, 2:1-12)
When Jesus speaks or acts, what sort of things happen?

Read Mark 2:18-3:6
3. Even at this early stage, Jesus divided opinions. Some people were amazed by him, while others were enraged.
What are your early impressions of Jesus?

Do you have questions about Mark 1:1-3:36?

Christianity Explored II

Hello, and a very blessed 2014!!!

For the first few months of this year we will be taking a look at Christianity Explored II. This series will give you time to think about the big questions of life, and to explore the live of the person at the heart of the Christian faith - Jesus Christ.

There will be materials, and it has discussions questions, outline note on the talks, background information, and plenty of space to write your own thought and ideas.
